Can I give my dog Tylenol { Acetaminophen } for pain relief? Is it also effective to treat arthritis? What is the dose rate for Tylenol in the dog? Will there be side effects?

Can I give my dog Tylenol { Acetaminophen } for pain relief?

Hopefully you are just checking things out rather having already dosed your dog with Tylenol { Acetaminophen } The situation is that most common over the counter human NSAID { non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs }  including Tylenol { Acetaminophen } are not used much in dogs these days because there have been many incidents reported of side effects and toxicity with these drugs. Also are now much better alternatives for controlling fever and pain in dogs available to your vet.

The bottom line is that this drug { Tylenol, Acetaminophen } should never be given to dogs except under direct veterinary supervision, and that's not going to happen very often.

However in terms of human over the counter NSAIDs you do still have one reasonable safe and effective option, this being Aspirin, this drug is in fact sometimes prescribed for dogs.

A typical dose rate for Aspirin would be 5 mg per pound of your dog's body weight given orally twice daily. The judgement whether to dose with Aspirin is of course up to you but here is a link to a web page with all the facts you might need : LINK
